Josue parked outside Kayla’s house and leaned back against the head rest. So much for a day off. First Mallory’s call about the accident as he’d been about to drop into bed after a long night in the department, and then the flight to Dunedin, where their patient had immediately been admitted for urgent surgery. Despite the woman’s heart stopping once due to blood loss and low blood pressure, she’d survived that far, and he was hopeful that once the surgeons had got her in Theatre her chances would rise. They’d promised to let him know later on today how she’d got on and what else they’d found.

He’d been dropped off at home by the paramedic after they’d returned to Queenstown. Home? Not the house necessarily, but he still felt comfortable in this town, with the people he worked with, and especially with Mallory. It was as though he belonged here, which he couldn’t really. He didn’t belong anywhere much except in Nice, and even there he tended to stay on the periphery of the group of friends he’d made through medical college and working in various hospitals.

As much as he’d hankered for caring friends and people to love him, as soon as he’d started getting close to anyone the old fears of being found lacking would start to haunt him.

Had he left some of his hang-ups behind when he’d come to this country? It was almost as though, because no one knew him, he could relax some of his fears of being rejected and therefore felt accepted.

Then there was Mallory. She added to, or was, the main reason he felt as though he’d found someone special that he could bond with. Like with Dean, he’d felt close to Mallory from the beginning. Unlike with Dean, there was a lot more in the closeness than just friendship. She was sexy and gorgeous and kept his veins bubbling just thinking about her.

Was she the reason Queenstown felt comfortable in a way nowhere else had for him? That couldn’t be true. He had to be exaggerating the hunger for more to life than work and an occasional fling that had begun filling him from the night he’d met her. Hard to believe only one week ago she’d woken him on her couch, her eyes filled with questions and a warning not to be a smartass with her.

For two nights and two days he’d enjoyed her company over pizza and coffee, out in the bush, and getting very close in her bed. Then he hadn’t set eyes on her until this morning. She was as beautiful as he’d remembered, as confident and capable dealing with the accident victims as she’d been with the boys last Saturday.

A sigh escaped. He’d missed her all week, especially when he hadn’t been busy at work and had time on his hands. Twice he’d picked up his phone to call her. Both times he’d stared at her number, finger hovering above the screen as he’d thought hard.
